Who are the Auteur Directors?

In December, we discussed the topic of "Who are the auteur directors?" The group then gave attributes to many popular directors. Some directors had names that were immediately recognizable with attributes which were immediately understood. Others were less distinguishable but still known within their niche or by their cult audiences.

  • Woody Allen: New York themes. Neurotic. Infidelity.
  • Robert Altman: Popeye (1980). Arthouse Distributor. People walking around without camera breaks.
  • Paul Thomas Anderson: Boogie Nights (1997).
  • Wes Anderson: Wistful. Quirky. Family films.
  • Hal Ashby: Being There (1979).
  • Noah Baumbach: Kicking and Screaming (1995). Youthful spark.
  • Ingmar Bergman: 1960s.
  • Francis Ford Coppola: known for Youth without Youth (2007).
  • Tim Burton: Outlandish. Surreal.
  • Brian De Palma: Graphic. Sexually charged. Sexual tension.
  • John Ford: Westerns.
  • Alfred Hitchcock: Twists.
  • Peter Jackson: Cult movies.
  • Spike Lee: Brooklyn.
  • George Lucas: he picked nobodies and made them successful. Excellent plots. Special effects.
  • Tyler Perry: Black comedy.
  • Sam Raimi: Quirky, Horror comedies. Evil. Dead.
  • Robert Rodriguez: Grindhouse (2007).
  • Martin Scorsese: Gangster.
  • Stephen Speilberg: Great director of the 1980s and 1990s.
  • Quentin Tarantino: Violence.
